Webinar Series “AI in action” SCAI – Sorbonne Centre for ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Series of Webinar “AI in Action”

SCAI is launching a series of webinars “AI in action” on the different AI fields of application.

Webinars will take place in English on Zoom once a month on Tuesdays at 4pm (Paris time) and 7pm (Abu Dhabi time).

For each webinar, one renown expert will present how AI is implemented in his/her field of expertise and will exchange views with the audience. The webinars last approximately one hour and are aimed at a diverse audience: students, professionals, managers, engineers…

  • Tuesday 23 February: “Ethics of AI: the border between vision and human” by Laurence Devillers

Laurence Devillers is professor in artificial intelligence at Sorbonne University since September 2011, and she is conducting her research at LIMSI (Laboratoire d’Informatique pour la Mécanique et les Sciences de l’Ingénieur), where she has been leading a team since 2004 on "affective and social dimensions in spoken interactions". She previously taught computer science and in particular artificial intelligence in the Computer Science department of the University of Orsay. She also worked after her PhD at Stanford Research Institute in Paris. Since 2015, she has been a member of CERNA, the Allistène's Commission of reflection on research ethics in digital sciences and technologies. She participated in the writing of the report on the ethics of research in robotics, she directed the report on the ethics of research in machine learning, and she is currently coordinating a report on the ethics of research on conversational agents. She holds a PhD (1992) and a habilitation to direct research (2006) in Computer Science. Her research activities have included 3 main periods: speech recognition (1989-1994), human-computer dialogue systems (1995-2002) and affective computing (2001).

  • Tuesday 16 March: Guillaume Thfoin

Guillaume Thfoin is Head of Business Analytics at Majid Al Futtaim, the leading shopping mall, communities, retail and leisure pioneer across the Middle East, Africa and Asia. In his role, Guillaume is responsible for driving the company’s digital and analytics transformation, leading a team of more than 60 people.

Prior to joining Majid Al Futtaim, Guillaume held multiple roles in major Consumer Packaged Goods companies such as SC Johnson and Kraft Foods, analytics company Nielsen, as well as in pure tech company Yahoo. Prior to joining Majid Al Futtaim, he led product and strategy at Teralytics, a Telecom Big Data Monetization start-up based in Zurich and New York, where he raised USD 25 million from the largest VCs in Europe.

Guillaume is a member of the Dubai Artificial Intelligence Ethics Advisory Board as well as the Master of Analytics and Computer Science Industry Advisory Board for Heriot-Watt University Dubai. He holds Bachelor and Master degrees in Telecoms and Management from the Institut Mines-Telecom Business School, France and has completed an MBA at University Laval, Canada.

  • Tuesday 6 April: “Understanding the business value and risks of artificial intelligence” by Theodoros Evgeniou

Theodoros Evgeniou is Professor at INSEAD since 2001, working on Machine Learning and AI for the past 25 years, on areas ranging from AI innovations for business process optimization and improving decisions, to data literacy and business transformation practices, AI and regulation, as well as on new Machine Learning methods. He has four degrees from MIT, two BSc degrees simultaneously, Computer Science and Mathematics, a Master and a PhD degree in Computer Science. His work has appeared in leading journals, such as in Science Magazine, Machine Learning, Nature Digital Medicine, HBR magazine, and others. He is currently director of the INSEAD Executive Education programs on “Transforming your Business with AI” and “AI for Business”. He is a member of the OECD Network of Experts on AI, an advisor for the BCG Henderson Institute, and a World Economic Forum academic partner for Artificial Intelligence. He gives talks and consults for a number of organizations in his areas of expertise.

  • Tuesday 18 May:  “Interpretability of AI: principles and case studies” by Christophe Geissler 

Christophe, Advestis Chairman and Head of Research, is a graduate of Ecole Normale Supérieure Ulm (mathematics and AI) and holds a degree as a Chartered Actuary.

His fields of interest and expertise include quantitative finance and Interpretable Machine Learning. He has successfully held senior positions in quantitative finance since 1986 in major banks (Lazard, CPR, BNP Paribas, Société Générale) before founding Advestis in 2011. Since 2009, Christophe has also been involved in Artificial Intelligence applied to life sciences.

Christophe is the Sponsor of the 2020 class of the Actuary Data Scientist training program provided by the French Institute of the Actuaries. 

  • Tuesday 8 June:  “Data science & healthcare: which value beyond the buzzwords? by Isabelle Hilali

Isabelle Hilali is the founder and CEO of datacraft, a Club which allows data experts to share good practices and which contributes to the acceleration of companies' AI related projects.  Isabelle is a pioneer in digital innovation and an experienced leader, she was managing director of the Center for Research and Interdisciplinarity before launching the startup datacraft. She has held senior management positions in healthcare, mobile, internet and education industries in multinational companies such as Orange in France or Sprint PCS in the USA. Isabelle is non-executive director of the Healthcare Data Institute and President of Santé Cie-Elivie's Digital Board. She is a senior lecturer at X-HEC's deeptech entrepreneurship Msc and she teaches innovation at ESSEC's Innovation & Health chair. Isabelle is personally committed to inclusion and equality of chances matters. She holds a diploma in political science and also in military strategy.

  • Tuesday 15 June:  “Quantifying the Cyber risk” by Olivier Lopez

Olivier Lopez is Professor at Sorbonne Université, Paris. He is the director of the Institute of Statistics (ISUP) and of the Master Degree in Actuarial Sciences. Olivier Lopez is a fully qualified member of the French Actuarial Association, and a member of its scientific board. He is a member of the Education Committee of the European and International Actuarial Associations. His main field of research is the application of data science to actuarial sciences, with several collaborations with the industry. He is currently directing a project funded by AXA Research Fund (and supported by the Risk Fundation) on cyber insurance.

  • Tuesday 29 June: "Simulating social phenomena through agent-based computational models" by Gianluca Manzo

Gianluca Manzo is a research fellow in sociology at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). He applies computational models and social network analysis to the study of social stratification and diffusion dynamics. He has recently edited the Research Handbook on Analytical Sociology (Edward Elgar, 2021, forthcoming), and authored Agent-based Models and Causal Inference (Wiley, 2021, forthcoming).
